Objectives: Students will analyze the Nuremberg Laws and photos from Auschwitz and identify how propaganda in the German school system led to the acceptance of the Holocaust among much of the German youth.
Procedure:
Students will read the book Night by Elie Wiesel
Students will identify the following: scapegoats, propaganda, Hitler Youth, Auschwitz, Nuremberg Laws, racial purity
Students will read the Nuremberg Laws and discuss their initial reactions using the SEA method
Students will use NARA worksheet to further analyze Laws
Students will view pictures from Auschwitz and discuss their initial reactions using the SEA Method
Students will use NARA worksheet to further analyze photos
Students will be introduced to the propaganda used by the Nazis, especially with German children
Students will be divided into 4 groups and using the SEA method and NARA worksheets; each group will analyze the following propaganda sources used in Nazi Germany’s school system:
Der Giftpilz(the Toadstool)
The German National Catechism
The Eternal Jew
Trust No Fox…
Each group will be responsible for making a short presentation about their propaganda source. Drawing conclusions from their analysis of the primary source documents they will discuss the impact of propaganda on school children and its affect on children’s attitudes and behavior.
I agree, I think the you have chosen a lot of great resources to integrate into your lesson and capture your student's attention as well as meet the diverse learning styles that each classroom contains.

What a great idea for a lesson! I just may have to use this in my history class. I think it is so hard for students to understand why people so easily followed Hitler. Your lesson uses a variety of good sources to help students somewhat grasp what German students were being exposed to at that time, giving students an idea of why people listened and followed such a dictator. I believe that you integrated a lot of great usage of the primary resource activities throughout your lesson. I like how you included some individual evaluation and some group evaluation. I believe that it is helpful to have students work together to see others perspectives.
